BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico reported 5,573 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its national total to 726,431, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.
Meanwhile, 399 additional deaths were reported, bringing the death toll to 76,243, the ministry added.

MANILA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 304,226 after the Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,995 new daily cases on Sunday.
The DOH said that the number of recoveries also surged to 252,510 after 19,630 more patients recovered. Meanwhile, 60 more patients died from the viral disease, bringing the death toll to 5,344.

MOSCOW -- Russia reported 7,867 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its national count to 1,151,438, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement on Sunday.
Russia's COVID-19 infections have been growing fast after the summer holiday season with large-group gatherings and many restrictions lifted, it said.

BEIJING -- Profits of China's major industrial firms maintained steady recovery in August as the production and operations of enterprises further improved, official data showed on Sunday.
Profits of China's major industrial firms totaled 612.81 billion yuan (about 90 billion U.S. dollars) last month, increasing by 19.1 percent year-on-year, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed.
The Chinese economy has withstood the test of the COVID-19 epidemic, with recovery since the second quarter better than expected, said Wang Yiming, national political advisor and former deputy director of the Development Research Center of the State Council.
